Day 7: Around the bend........ Dayville to Prairie City Oregon. 45.3 miles, 2244 ft of ascent! Top temperature 103 degrees

It seems you never know what you will find around the next bend.  Today we opted to rise early and be on the road by 6:30 AM to beat the heat.  Our trail boss (Stephanie) was a bit antsy and had her helmet atop her head when we finally took off at 6:49 AM.  Not too bad for a herd of turtles!

The road was quiet and the surface smooth at this early hour.  It afforded time to think and enjoy every vista.  We were able to enjoy a few rest stops along the way before the traffic picked up and the road became gravel-y.  For a while, it seemed almost unbearable.  😣

Once we passed through the town of John Day, the traffic thinned out and the shoulder was wide, the gravel was no longer a problem.  We developed a good pace on rolling hills.  The sun became hot around 11:15AM and very hot by 11:30.  The pace slowed and we took many breaks to douse with water.  We rolled into town before our hoped-for-time of noon, picked up some lunch and local gossip at Chuck's Little Diner and then checked into the historic Prairie City Hotel.  Time to relax....................cocktails at 5!
