Day 17 Hamilton to Sula (population 44)
It was hard to leave Hamilton this morning. Such lovely accomodations! The good news however was that Pete had found a way around going on the highway for a vast majority of the trip today. YAY! Whenever I try something cool like that people invariably end up in a swamp and come out with a horror story; covered with scratches and bug bites and a little irked. Pete however nailed it with this peaceful, winding back road tour that first took us out of town through the suburbs of Hamiton. You can't help but notice the vast amount of deep trenches and creeks with fast flowing water for miles and miles around these towns. No wonder everybody freely waters their lawns!
After a couple of turns, we ended up on a packed dirt road that took us through some amazing properties. And of course, we had many opportunities to view and photograph Trapper Mountain. It is a commanding force, both beautiful and ethereal. It is hard to stop taking pictures of that mountain (as is evidenced by the number and variety of postcards of it in all of the stores).
We had a leisurely ride for several miles until we popped out in the town of Darby. There we checked out the grocery store and took a short break and breather before getting on the dreaded highway. Six miles of very little shoulder and pretty heavy traffic. I have a tendency to squeak loudly when a tractor trailer goes by. Just sayin...I know it won't save my life, but it helps me get through the fear...kind of. Getting off the bike to let truckers by is the best policy for me. I am so glad it was only 6 miles of highway riding today. Thank you Peter!
We "only" did 35.9 miles today. ( listen to me talk!) So the day just flew by. Before we knew it we were at the camp ground and glad of it. It was another scorcher of a day so the creek running around the periphery of the camp ground was enticing. And we were instantly cooled down when we waded into the fast flowing water for a few minutes. Ahhhh. Of course snacks were par for the course. Such healthy options.
We had a nice meal (my personal favorite) of hotdogs, corn on the cob, cucumber salad and all of the fixings by chef Lesli. A perfect way to end another awesome day on the road with great friends.
There were a few extraneous happenings today; an upside-down outhouse, a tipped over bike and a flat tire. sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you're the bug!
Tomorrow should be another adventure....
